Day 61-75: On the Mend Again

In my last post, I talked about alarming new neurological symptoms. I'm glad to say that two weeks later, those symptoms have all but gone away. I credit my improvement to rigidly following a low-B6 diet. If I don't know what the B6 content of something is, then I won't eat it. In general, I try to keep my daily B6 intake at or under 1.3mg. I also try not to exceed 0.4mg with any one meal.

So, 2-and-a-half months after first developing symptoms and stopping supplementation, how am I doing? I would say fairly well, but not cured. At this point, I'm not sure I ever will be 100% healed. What B6 toxicity does (as far as I understand it) is deteriorate the protective myelin sheath around nerves (a process called demyelination). I seem to have suffered the worst demyelination in my arms (the ulnar nerve), which leads to almost constant tingling around the elbows. Maybe my arms will heal over time (it's still fairly early -- some people take years to heal), but only time will tell.

Other than that, I don't have any noticeable symptoms (unless I fall off the wagon and eat B6, that is). That's why I say I'm doing fairly well. Considering how bad B6 toxicity symptoms CAN be, mine aren't so bad.

I saw your comment and I belive that this neuropathy has something to do with small fibre that they dont have myelin.Did you took an EMG test to see if it something rong like ---demyelinisation???

  2. hi, you mentioned you felt like your body was the ocean. I kinda feel the same, I feel like a washed cloth, my legs and arms move too easily, feel so weak. Is this the same thing you had? I took 50 mg B6 for 14 days and I am still suffering. Other symptoms are gone but this is still lingering and I wonder if I get my life back. I am 31 and its been 70 days without supplement.

  3. Hi Gyorgyi. Yes, that it similar to what I was experiencing. My legs felt weak, almost like they were going to fall out from under me. My head felt detached from my body, and any fast movements, like turning around quickly, would make my head spin. During that time, I had to stop exercising on the trampoline (great for circulation) and the treadmill, because my brain just couldn't handle all the motion. It was like being on a storm-tossed ship.

I'm glad to say that most of those symptoms have ended, but I still notice them on occasion.

  4. Hey! Thank you for the answer. At the beginning I exercised a lot, I felt I always have to move and made me feel better. Couple weeks ago I started feeling like this and now I cant exercise anymore. I feel tired, sleepy wore out the whole day. I feel the same as you did. I am at 77 days in recovery and now you gave me some hope. This is scary and pray it will pass. Do you have any recommendation for these symptoms? Do you still experience this weakness? I guess it is more manageable now.

    1. I haven't experienced any weakness lately. But early on, I definitely did. I remember one time when I couldn't even cut through boiled spaghetti noodles! I had to use both hands to slice my pasta. That was scary. But I'm glad to say that that hasn't happened again.

A lot of people suffering from B6 toxicity experience fatigue and weakness, so your symptoms aren't uncommon. But keep in mind, your fatigue might not have anything to do with B6 toxicity. If you are stringently avoiding high-B6 foods, then you might not be getting enough of other vitamins. I would recommend keeping track of everything you eat in a diet tracker, so you can make sure you are getting enough calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin K, etc. I know at one point I wasn't getting enough magnesium, which was really making me feel bad, so I started eating pumpkin seeds (I grind them into powder and sprinkle them over my food -- they go great with anything). Of course, I wouldn't recommend taking a supplement for any of these things. That's what got me into this mess in the first place. But you might try experimenting with your diet and see if certain foods affect your energy levels.

  5. Thank you for answering. I am actually not week just floaty. 3 weeks ago my legs were about to fall off a couple times and now my arms and sometimes my back move too easily. I see you also had problems with your arms. This floatiness seem to go around my body as last month I had it on my neck and I thouht my head was ganna fall off. Luckily its all but gone from neck and shoulders. I hate this feeling so much and so scared if my legs stay strong or not. I think its getting better but who knows. Its just so weird it all started 1.5 months after stopping b6.
Btw i eat pumpkin seed too every day and very healthy diet keeping low b6. Tomorrow i will hit 3 months in recovery that gives me hope as all my other symptoms are gone.
You Are my other hope becuase for others it took month/ years to get toxic and not 2 weeks on 50 mg :( So thank you again.

  6. Hi Gyorgyi, did you ever get relief from the floaty feelings? During the dya I feel so detached and full of brain fog. the physical tingling and nerve pain in my leg seem to be getting better as well as the weakness in my legs for now, but I get so detached, as if I am not in my body. Horrible and very scary. I find it difficult to interact with my kids and focus at work at times. I seem better at night, or if i havent eaten much, and when i wake up in the morning I am generally ok. Please let me know.

Thomas, I see you also had this side effect? the detachment. did it kind of feel like you quite all there, kind of detached, difficult to focus etc? storm tossed ship sounds close. that mental aspect is my worst symptom. Can you remember how long yo usuffered with that particular symptom? im only 47 days out. Should I hold hope that it goes away? I do have clarity most nights and mornings, I also have this feeling like my nerves are irritated, almost an anxiety.

    thanks guys...

    Regards,
